Spring
2008 Michigan Quilter's Retreat
|
| This
retreat was a really fun one. We had several new
people and they were an awesome addition to our
regular retreat quilters. There were a total of
37 quilters that stayed the week and two people
came for the day. The Janome education team was
there for classes and Shel bought the top of the
line Janome sewing/embroidery machine with all the
bells and whistles and lots of extras. We expect
to see some neat projects at the next retreat that
Shel will be showing. |
| As
usual we did the live auctions. This year we raised
over $1500.00 which was given to the Springs Retreat
Center for their use. They are choosing to use most
of it towards paying off the loan for building the
center and also buying one more canoe. The rest
of the money will be used in the general operating
fund. Besides people bidding to get stuff they wanted
they also bid on items that they didn't want to
take home. So--we re auctioned and made double money.
The gals were really generous this year. |
| Several
of us "smokers" were in the campground
area of the grounds and were able to watch two eagles
sitting in the tree very close to us. We sat there
for about a half an hour watching them. A couple
of deer poked their heads in the area and watched
gram and I one morning. Gram also watched a bunny
one morning. Gram and the gang also scared up a
possum and they chased it for a while. There is
a lot of wild life up here in Gladwin. With 300
acres of private land for the camp there is always
something neat to watch. The Whiporwills were rather
noisy at night and also the frogs and nighthawks.
We could hear the coyotes some nights. In the daytime
we watched fish jumping in the water and geese and
ducks swimming. It is surprising how loud the forest
is at night. |
| Lots
of beautiful quilts were shown at our evening show-and-tells.
Place mat kits were given out by Charlie (Harleygrandma)
and many of them were finished by the quilters this
week. We had demo classes and as always free drawings
by Caroline from Carolines Sewing, our vendor. I
won the free night at Carolines bed and breakfast
over the quilt shop. I even drew my own ticket.
I will share the discount for 5 other quilters at
the next February mini retreat that our group of
six always do. Some of us took a road trip to buy
fabric at Rebecca Millers Amish quilt shop. Her
prices can't be beat. |
| I
think we all gained weight because of the three
meals served us each day. It seems like we no longer
get back downstairs to sew and it was time to head
back up to the dinning room for another large meal.
The meals were wonderful. Meridith out did herself
this spring. She even made homemade huge sandwich
buns and also bread sticks. The staff always treats
us well and they are always asking how they can
serve us. They really make us feel welcome there.
|
| Princess
and Shel did the live auctions two nights and we
still had goodies left. Kriket and I auctioned off
the last of the stuff on the third night. It is
so much fun watching the gals fight over someone
else's hand me downs. I now really appreciate all
the work Princess does at the auctions. This is
no easy task keeping up with all the excitement. |
| Some
of the gals are over achievers. They are the ones
that sit at their machines and sew nonstop day and
night. Like these quilters actually finish stuff!
When ever someone finishes a top or a project they
stand up for a "Ta Da" and shows their
work. They get a huge applause and we get to see
another finished piece. It is amazing what some
of these gals accomplish. Pictures of the retreat
and show and tell will be added to QuiltCampus soon. |

If
anyone is interested in attending our next retreat
you
can e-mail me. Our next retreat will be October
20-24 and we are already one fourth of the way
filled up. This is a nonrefundable booking and
once I receive your check you are booked. Price
is still $223 for fall. The retreat center is
just outside of Gladwin, Michigan along the the
Sugar River. They have a huge modern building
with 20 hotel type rooms with two double beds
and private bath. Downstairs we have a large well
lit sewing room with 6 foot tables for each quilter.
This price includes all meals and it is the total
price for the retreat. All demo classes are free.
Caroline Barns is our local vendor and she has
fabric and notions on site for 24/7 shopping.
On demand coffee machine and tea and cocoa is
in the dinning room. This is available 24/7 also.
This fall we will be having another hayride one
evening of retreat. The staff puts park benches
on the hay wagon and they drive us through the
woods and down the trails so we can see a lot
of the camp area. We will also be making a fire
in the stone fireplace in the sewing room and
toasting some mores. Think about joining us. Next
year the price will be $10 more because the camp
is raising prices to keep up with inflation. It
is still a very affordable retreat.
