The
story behind the Spidron Table Topper
Spidron is a trademark of Dániel Erdély
|
 |
| Spidron
quilt made for Janka |
I
belong to a yahoo group of quilters and one day
a member posted a web site about spidrons. I had
never seen a spidron before so it was new to me.
She knew I was a math lover and posted "hey
cindy, wouldn't this make a great table topper".
I visited the spidron web site and after drooling
I thought about the table topper. But then I thought,
who would be so crazy to take on such a challenge.
For several months the spidron image was on my mind.
I was searching the internet to learn more about
this cool geometric system. Anyway, I decided to
take the plunge and started to design a table topper
inspired by the spidron shape.
I
first introduced the Spidron Table Topper
quilt class at QuiltCampus.
 |
| Package
held by Dániel |
If
you took the class you may remember that the spidron
was discovered by Dániel Erdély
from Hungary. Dániel came across our class
info page and contacted me. After almost falling
over from getting an e-mail from such a famous
person I e-mailed him back. Since then we have
corresponded back and fourth now and then. Come
to find out he has a 13 year old daughter named
Janka. Anyway, he was so excited about the quilt
with spidrons that I asked my mil if she would
make Janka a spidron table topper. My mil was
more than eager to do so and here it is. Janka's
favorite colors are bright greens.
I
packaged up the quilt and off to Hungary it went.
Well at least I thought it was going to go to
Hungary. Did you know there are a lot of rules
and regulations to ship things outside of the
USA? Well I was learning those rules real quick....hehe.
Anyway, after repackaging the quilt according
to the postal rules, the quilt was finally on
its way to Hungary. After three weeks the package
was in Dániel's hands.
Look
at all those stamps and seals! Lets see: There
is the customs stamp, the return receipt stamp,
the registered stamp, the air mail stamp and other
odd stamps. Note the 3D stamp on the front corner
that looks like a rubik's cube. That is a new
stamp designed by Dániel, which will hopefully
be bought by the Hungarian Post Office.
Janka
was now able to see and enjoy her new quilt!

This
October we had a total of 34 quilters attend our
fall retreat. Several chatters were there and
we had BlueBird for the very first time. BlueBird
traveled the farthest coming in from south Texas.
As of now BlueBird is still sitting in Michigan
waiting for a flight out. With heavy storms not
only in Michigan but several states south she
got to the airport and found all flights had been
canceled. She made a quick call to me from the
airport and asked for Princess's phone number
and after calling her of course the princess rescued
her. Princess picked her up at the airport and
took her to her house for the night.
We
had several free demo classes which many of the
gals attended. Our vendor, Caroline had a record
sale of fabrics and notions. I took a road trip
with gram and went to Caroline's shop and grabbed
a great Janome table on sale for 20% off. What
a deal. The machines fit right inside the table.
I am a happy camper!
On
Thursday afternoon the Janome distributor came
to retreat with Caroline. He said he never saw
so many Janome machines in one place before. He
was blown away. Then we started telling him that
many of us had another 2 or even 3 Janomes yet
at home. He offered us a wonderful opportunity.
At
the May 2008 spring retreat he will have the Janome
educators there to show us all the features of
our machines. They will be teaching us all what
all our machines can do. Right away 14 gals signed
up for spring retreat. Paid $223 price to book
a spot in our retreat. I know this retreat is
going to really fill quickly. If you have a Janome
machine, or plan to buy one this is an opportunity
to really get expert lessons. Caroline has one
of each of the models in her shop now. She can
take orders at retreat for anyone wanting to buy
a Janome. By the way, Caroline really has discounted
prices. She lowers her commission so she can make
the machines more affordable for us.
We
didn't have any unusual happenings at retreat
this fall. Dan, the manager let us "smokers"
go to the RV area of the camp to have our smokes
so we didn't have to deal with the local Sheriff's
patrol who were always checking on us before.
Ha one up on the boys in brown this year :) Some
of us drove back there and spotted deer, we had
a eagle,, twice a large owl flew up in front of
our cars. It was a beautiful setting on the high
bank over looking the backwaters of the Sugar
River. The trees were in colour and it was picture
perfect. Much nicer than having to go up by the
road or into the dark path in the forest.
Derek
and Dan took us on a wagon ride around the 250
acres of camp. We had a 45 minute ride through
the forest and around the river. They put park
benches up on the hay wagon this year so it was
much less messy with no straw and much more comfortable.
The camp dogs began the trip up on the wagon but
being herding dogs they couldn't stay up long.
The romped in the woods and on the trails racing
ahead of us. It is always funny when the dogs
start trying to herd campers. We laughed when
a couple of people would leave the building away
from a group and the dogs would head out and circle
around them. Ellie May and Jeb are always ready
for a ball game and they roll the balls to the
campers as we leave the building.
Again
this year we had the auction. Princess and Breezee
worked hard for two evenings offering up other
peoples discards of quilt books, fabrics, quilt
tops, and miscellaneous things. We did an unbelievable
$930.00 in sales which we gave to the camp. Hopefully
they will get us some hand rails this next year
for beside the shower/tubs. Dan was speechless
when he accepted this generous amount of money
from us. Way to go girls!
Next
years Spring Michigan Retreat will be May 12-16.
Price is $223.00 total for all inclusive lodging
and meals. All classes are free. This is a great
price at a wonderful facility. We have 3 hot meals
a day prepared for us. Our rooms are nice hotel
type rooms with two double beds and private baths.
Downstairs we have a huge sewing room with lots
of light, electric plugs and each person gets
their own 6 foot table for their machines. We
also have large tables for cutting stations and
irons and ironing board stations. There is a large
river rock fireplace where we toast marshmallows
for someores. There is a nice new bathroom off
the sewing room and a large vendor area for Caroline's
fabrics and notions. We have a elevator and everything
is in one building. If you are interested in joining
us contact
Sunny. Our retreats are prepaid non-refundable.
Once I receive your checks you are booked. Hope
to see you at retreat 2008 :)
