| Apple Blossoms
Painting by Vicki Johnson |

This
class is designed as an introduction to the joy of painting on fabric.
There are many many techniques that can be used to create exciting
fabric from the pictorial to abstract. Just about any thing an artist
can do on canvas or paper can be done with paint on fabric. The main
difference is how to control the paint when doing it on fabric as
it wants to run much more. The paints used are the same paint used
to silk screen most commercial fabrics, so the painting will be just
as permanent as the fabric you buy. Paint is much easier to use than
dye as it only needs to be heat set with an iron as opposed to steaming.
It is more direct in application than dye, therefore the results can
be immediately seen. |

The
emphasis in this class will be on learning how to control the paint
while developing several different painting techniques. There will
not be any need for drawing skills. A pattern will be provided for
you to trace onto your fabric. Several different choices, mostly in
color , will be given so you can individualize your work. The teacher
has taught this class to many students and everyone's painting has
looked different even though they start with the same pattern. This
is part of the joy of paint, individual expression always happens
just like individual handwriting. |

The
finished painting is 9" x 9" and can be used to create a
small quilt as in the examples, or you can put it in a pillow, jacket
back, or do more paintings and make a larger quilt. Students have
done all of these with their Apple Blossom painting. |
