Applique on bias cut blocks

Before you cut the square of fabric on the diagonal .... draw a line down the center of it and machine baste on both sides to keep the bias from stretching.

Patchwork blocks do not come out the right size or shape

1.

Are there cutting templates with the pattern? Make sure the templates are printing to scale by doing the Print Test.

2.

Are there odd shaped pieces? Check out the Piecing Tutorial for a tip to working with those strange shaped pieces.

3.

Is the block to small? Try making the block again using a scant 1/4" seam (1 or two threads less).

4.

Are you working with pieces cut on the bias? Try tracing the cut size of your pattern piece onto freezer paper and iron the freezer paper pattern to the fabric piece. The fabric should be 1/4" larger all around (your seam allowance). After sewing the pieces together remove the freezer paper. Another idea is to starch your fabric to give it a little stability.

5.

Be sure to match seams when sewing. Especially at the seam on points.

6.

Pressing seams in opposite directions helps eliminate the bulk.

What are those 1/8" cut sizes?

.

What the heck is a 5-5/8" square? 5/8" is right between 1/2" and 3/4". You can use this chart for other eight inch measurements you may see in blocks.

1/8" 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" 5/8" 3/4" 7/8" 1"
